Match report — Round 11 v Wodonga Heart
There were only four matches played on Sunday. Wodonga Heart does not have division one or division two men’s teams.
We were disappointed to arrive at the ground to find that the pitches had been vandalised and had to manage a quick repair job on Sunday morning before they could be played on.
Division 2 women
Cobram Roar 6 defeated Wodonga Heart 0
It was a clash of the titans in division two women's competition where the two top sides went head to head. The Roarettes brought their A game to the table and proved to be too strong, beating Wodonga Heart in a 6-0. The first 10 minutes was end to end football by both sides attacking and defending aggressively; both teams come out with a game plan and the Roar girls executed theirs to perfection.
The first goal was a slight scramble in the box, Talia scored the opener to give Roar the lead. The game continued in an even contest but the Roar ladies proved to be faster and stronger with better ball movement. The second goal came from a great combination of play between Ella Lissington and Marlie Noonan assisted by Laydah and Monique. The pass combination saw Ella burst through a Wodonga Heart defence and put one past the keeper. Wodonga Heart come back with a quick attack but the Roar’s defence was strong and they were determined to keep a clean sheet. The backline of Jess, Brenda, Alyssa and Angelina is strong and one that not many attackers will get through. With the midfield and the forwards also putting in their defensive duties, the back four had protection all game.
The term emerged from the half-time break and was quick to get on the scoreboard with a blistering run by Layda beating three Heart players to find herself in a 1 on 1 with the keeper and placing the ball in the back of the net with poise. Minutes later we saw Layda making the same run, but this time played a square ball across for Talia to score her second goal for the game taking it to four-nil lead. Heart looked deflated while the Cobram Roar ladies hit top gear scoring two more goals — one through Ella and Marlie with a powerful strike from 25 yards out besting the goalkeeper who managed to get a hand to it but could not stop the ball.
The women now comfortably sit at the top of the table with three points clear lead over Wodonga Heart in their respective division. The women have two byes over the next few weeks before they take on Wodonga Heart again in Wodonga.
