Kerry Baldacchino is a woman on a mission.

The Cobram Lawn Bowls Club member will represent the Murray and Goulburn Valley areas at the Victorian State Championships in April this year.

For Ms Baldacchino, reaching the championship is just another accomplishment on her long list of bowling accomplishments.

In 2024, the bowling enthusiast won her sixth club championship.

The Cobram local has always been a sporting enthusiast, competing in various sports in her younger years.

She started bowling as a social activity in 2001 before moving to competitive lawn bowls in 2002-03.

For Ms Baldacchino, it’s the competitive nature of the sport and the tactical skill needed that she loves.

"It’s like a chess game," she said.

"You're trying to force the other player to make a mistake... there’s a lot to learn."

To get to the state championships was no easy task.

Ms Baldacchino, representing the Murray area, secured her place after defeating the Goulburn Valley region’s representative.

Consequently, at the upcoming state championship, she will represent both areas.

Ms Baldacchino admitted that the lead-up to securing her spot wasn’t easy.

“I was lucky enough to win,” she said.

Though bowls are often seen as an older person’s game, Ms Baldacchino said that wasn’t the case anymore with many young people getting on board.

She said that along with being a strong social activity, playing bowls also meant people could get active out in the sun, a part of the sport Ms Badacchino loves.

“I love hot weather," she said.

“I will play in 40°C.”

As for advice to any future bowling players, Ms Baldacchino doesn’t have a specific tip for victory, but does offer some sage advice.

“It doesn’t matter whether you win or lose so long as you take something out of that game and learn from it. That would be my biggest tip.”
