Cricket Shepparton has named its eight junior squads which will represent the association at this weekend’s Wangarratta Challenge.

More than 80 young stars from the competition’s junior clubs will compete in eight teams from under-16 to under-12.

The squads will take on their counterparts from the neighbouring Wangaratta and District Cricket Association.

Cricket Shepparton junior organiser Peter Holland said the challenge was the perfect opportunity to gift more representative cricket to junior players before the new year.

“We’ve got 80 kids playing for Cricket Shepparton,” Holland said.

“It’s a well-received challenge for the local organisations and it gives the local kids an opportunity to play more representative cricket ahead of Junior Country Week in January.

“We’ll be using the competition as a trial to Junior Country Week, we’re pretty keen to get these kids across the park, we’ve been washed out a few times this year and the forecast is looking good.”

Holland said a large number of players in under-12 and across the board would play representative cricket for the first time on Sunday.

“A lot of the kids in the under-12s will be playing for the first time, it’ll give them a chance to play with and against some real good kids within the association,” he said.

The under-16s will take on Wangaratta at Deakin Reserve, while the under-15s will go head-to-head with their WDCA counterparts at Kialla Main Oval.

Under-14 Blue is at Euroa’s Friendlies Oval, while under-14 Black will host Wangaratta at Katandra.

Both under-13 squads are at Numurkah, with Blue to play its first game on Numurkah’s Main Oval, while Black will get started on Numurkah Oval 2.

The under-12 squads will play two Twenty20 formats at Mooroopna.

All games will start at 10.30am on Sunday, December 4.
