Round 14 of the Picola and District league was not a pleasant one for Mathoura’s senior football side.

The Timbercutters hosted league leader Katandra at Mathoura Recreation Reserve and, while there were some bright spots, were unable to match the Kats over the four quarters.

A sluggish start for Mathoura saw it go goalless in the first term, while Katandra got itself going with a pair of majors.

The Cutters added two of their own in the second, but the Kats matched and eclipsed them, kicking three to extend their lead to 19 points at half-time.

Mathoura’s strong middle period of the game continued as it kept pace with Katandra in the third with three goals apiece, but the Cutters stalled once again to a scoreless fourth quarter to be beaten comfortably 11.7 (73) to 5.1 (31)

Aron Burns chipped in a pair of goals for Mathoura, while Digby Newman also kicked two and Lachlan Carmody one.

While it wasn’t the result Mathoura (5-7) needed at this point in the season, the Cutters did better than most against the dominant Kats (11-1), who have a percentage of 346.93 this season.

After a general bye, Mathoura will look to a match-up against Strathmerton (11-2) on July 13, although facing the first and second sides in consecutive rounds isn’t ideal for a side which has dropped its past four matches.

Mathoura’s A-grade netball side lived up to its underdog status against one of the league’s top sides in Katandra, falling 70-20 in round 14.

The Timbercutters put in a respectable first quarter, trailing 16-9, but their offense stalled in the second and they could manage only a single goal.

Katandra built a 30-goal advantage at three-quarter time before a dominant 23-goal final period saw the Kats run away huge winners.

Mathoura (3-9) languishes in second-last place on the ladder and will face a similarly tough test against Strathmerton (10-3) on July 13.
