Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club’s annual tournament, was a fantastic event with more than 1300 players competing over four days.

The biggest event of its type in Australia, competitors played 2000 matches on 59 courts.

The weather was superb for the entire tournament, sunscreen and extra fluids were required for the first two days as the conditions slightly cooled in the later stages.

All the feedback from the players was positive, all enjoying another tournament.

Open fields top class

It was a great showcase of excellent quality in the Open Singles draws.

Both male and female fields had incredible amounts of participants, and were played at high standards.

Jasmin Starr versed reigning title holder Nicole Mullen in the Open Women’s.

The crowd witnessed many fantastic rallies before Starr edged out her opponent in a 6/3, 6/2 victory.

The men’s match between Pat Fitzgerald and Sam Dineen was another fantastic contest.

Long rallies and cleverly constructed points typified the match as Fitzgerald was able to overcome the gallant Dineen 6/1, 5/7 6/4, claiming back-to-back titles.

Locals have success

There was a terrific local turnout, with many players having a hit in last weekend’s tournament.

It has been a priority to ensure Saturday morning players, play in the tournament.

This was achieved alongside other members, really enjoying their tennis.

A lot of fun was had, and many took home some silverware.

Amazing Volunteers

The Tennis Tournament was truly unique, the sheer size of it is unmatched anywhere else.

An event of such magnitude, relies on its hundreds of volunteers.

Those who volunteered cannot be thanked enough.

Whether it was preparing the ovals in preparation for the tournament, serving food and drinks during the day or assisting in cleaning up the of a morning, each volunteer was fantastic.

The tournament box is where all the action occurred, and it was hectic.

A special shout out to the kids who assisted in the tournament box, their efforts where undeniable.

Acknowledgements

The courts were in great condition as the team, coordinated by head greenskeeper Michael Sheahan, worked tirelessly to ensure the facilities where first class.

The groundsman arrived at the courts at 5am each day, over Easter.

Sweet and Sour Sisters catered for the event again, arriving at 6am to get cooking.

Their work was fantastic as always.

Other food stalls where popular with the players, which were greatly appreciated.

A major thanks to the event sponsors, and major sponsor Yarrawonga Holiday Park.

Event sponsors allowed for the purchase of prizes and trophies, that are cherished by those that receive them.

Each of these sponsors have been long term sponsors of the Lawn Tennis Club and they are extremely appreciated.
