Finley has handed Echuca United’s senior football side a heavy defeat in round 16 of the Murray Football League.

With the Eagles’ recent success against Cobram, their first win of the season, still fresh in their minds, United would have taken to its home patch, Echuca Recreation Reserve, with hopes of a competitive showing against the league’s second-placed side.

Unfortunately for the host, Finley was out to make a statement and demonstrated its championship credentials at the Eagles’ expense.

United was unable to find the scoreboard at all in the first half. The Cats started with intent, piling on eight goals in the first period alone to go into the main break 66 points to the good.

Eagles’ fans were given a reason to celebrate early in the third, United grabbing its first points a little over two minutes after the resumption.

However, Finley didn’t allow the Eagles to gain any momentum, quickly adding their own first goal of the half, followed up with another eight before Echuca United managed to bookend the quarter with a late major.

United also got on the scoreboard late in the fourth but there was no doubt over the final result, Finley walking away 22-18 (150) to 3.0 (18) winners.

Jordan Frew, Samuel Goodluck and Nash Ramage made the inroads for United while Finley’s Tom Lang was devastating in front of goal, kicking five to lead the visitor.

Echuca United’s final home game of the season next Saturday will see the club celebrate its past players day and commemorate a decade since the club’s football reserves, under-12 and under-15 netball sides claimed premierships.

The Eagles will take on Numurkah, a side with everything to play for, currently just two points out of the finals places.

United will then conclude its season with a trip to league leaders Congupna on August 24.
