Echuca’s McMahon Shield premiership defence is off to the perfect start with a solid round one win over Bamawm-Lockington United in a rematch of last year’s semi-final.

The reigning premier made the journey down the highway to face the Lions, and batting first posted a formidable 8-243 from their 50 overs.

The runs were shared with overseas recruit Ewan Davidson top-scoring with 57 not out, while Curtis Townrow (47), Brendan Moyle (38) and 36 from Aidan Young headlined the well-rounded batting performance.

BLU’s Shannon Bish snared two wickets to lead the way for the Lions bowlers, but it was a mountain to climb for the batters.

Werner Brand’s 42 runs and Liam Hamilton’s 25 laid the groundwork for the run chase, but outside of Kade Pearse’s 12, no other batsman could reach double figures as Young (3-9), Rylea Jones (2-19) and Charlie Hinks (2-23) helped bundle the Lions out 102 in the 29th over, sealing a 141-run win to start the season.

The big win ensured Echuca goes into next week’s clash against Rochester on top of the ladder.

Meanwhile, BLU will be hoping to rebound from defeat quickly when it faces Nondies-Cohuna.
