This Sunday Wahgunyah Speedway closes its season with a number of terrific feature events to entertain that includes the Production Sedan 1000, the annual Victoria vs Tasmania Amca Nationals event, the Goulburn Ovens Sedan Association dash for cash plus Standard Saloon’s Sports Sedans, Ladies Sports Sedans, Vintage Sprintcar and Humpy Holdens, and Unlimited Sedans.
The Production Sedan 1000 has attracted a terrific list of competitors including Corowa’s own Trevor Mills. Brayden Creek, Marty Bassett, and Jack Bear. Mills a two-time national champion having won one of those at Wahgunyah starts as a favourite in the field that includes last start winner Scott Hawkins from Leeton, Stephen Laidlaw from Gippsland himself a two-time national champion, Chris Lack from Wangaratta a former national champion, Wayne Bourke from Leeton a consistent front of the field competitor.
Micheal Fleming-Robertson heads the nominations in Standard Saloons with Ketih Cattermole, Tony Spale, Scott McAuliffe, Rhyse Lavender, and Rod Stubbs all amongst Corowa-Rutherglen members competing. Josh Delarue aims to give the locals a run for their money.
In Sports Sedan action for the Ladies Kayla Mannix, Chloe Creek, Mackenzie Bunt, Nicole Gapes and Lisa Chalcraft will be a close night’s racing. Anybody can win, Chalcraft is the most experienced and anybody else would have done well if they can defeat Lisa on Sunday.
Last start Sports Sedan winner Mick Mannix will compete against his daughter’s partner Tommy McDonald this week. Mannix won the last final at Wahgunyah for Sports Sedans at the most recent race meeting. Daryl Joosten is the Corowa hope in Sports Sedans whilst Martin Heiner, Marcus Griffith and Garry Gapes hit the track also.
Peter Schmetzer leads the Unlimited Sedan nominations with Corowa member Wayne Eames keen to end the season with a podium. It is great to have Peter Camilleri back at a track he loves to race at, plus Darren Clarke will be a first timer whilst Steve McDonald has been thrown the keys of his son Corey’s Unlimited.
Another tough field for drivers to contend with in the Goulburn Ovens Sedan Association “Dash for Cash’ event with last start winner Billy O’Donoghue leading nominations from Tom and Ben Schmetzer, Justin Brockley, Daniel Joosten, Marty Bassett, Nathan Shortis and Victorian champion Daniel McCarten. O’Donoghue is a sponsor in the event and is keen to win back his own money, however there are a host of drivers lining up to close out the season with a win.
Fans can also enjoy some race craft from days gone by with some squirts from the Vintage Sprintcars that includes Ivan Wilson, Graham McAuliffe, and Colin Carey. Whilst the Humpy Holdens are back on track for another spirited demonstration of how things used to be that includes Joel Copeland, David Small, Ray Lavender, Daniel Copeland, Rod Glare and Dave Walton.
An 11am pit walk opportunity for fans to walk through the pits and get close up with the cars and the race driver stars is a feature at Wahgunyah Speedway, be at the pit gate crowd entrance on time for that opportunity.
Gates to the public open from 9am. Racing starts at 1pm. A full canteen operates on site with hot, cold food and drinks. Entry is $25 for adults whilst the club offers aged pensioners and Children aged 12 to 16 a $15 entry. Any child under 12 is free. Family tickets are $60 for 2 adults and 3 children in the 12 to 16 age bracket.
