Finley duo claim Outback challenge

Finley golfers Robert and Gai Singleton won the 2024 Outback Golf Challenge, while Junee couple Sandra and Geoff Wilson were runners-up.

The sun shone, the wind blew, and the flies were sticky as golfers from across the Riverina and northern Victoria enjoyed the 2024 Outback Golf Challenge hosted by Jerilderie, Finley and Berrigan clubs over the three day long weekend.

Local golfers from Jerilderie, Finley and Berrigan were joined by visiting golfers from Tocumwal, Numurkah, Junee, Chiltern, Albury, Axedale, Essendon, Leeton and The Rock with many outstanding scores achieved across the three days.

The organising committee extend their sincere thanks to both Dawmac Industries and the Coleambally Branch of Bendigo Bank for their generous major sponsorship.

The committee also thanked the respective host clubs volunteers who presented their courses in showcase conditions and administered their club event seamlessly.

The weekend a great success and played in great spirit and friendship.

The 2024 Outback Golf Challenge overall winners were Robert and Gai Singleton from Finley with 199 net.

Runners-up were Geoff and Sandy Wilson from Junee with 208.25 net.

Individual day results are as follows:

Day 1 – Jerilderie

Winners: Rob and Gai Singleton (Finley), 74/64.5.

Runners-Up: Aaron Purcell and Ian Taylor (Jerilderie), 72/66.5.

Third was Luke and Daz Keating (Jerilderie), 77/67.75, and fourth was Geoff and Sandra Wilson (Junee), 76/68.

Ball comp winners were Sam Hurlston and Mary Polkinghorne (Finley), Tony Smith and Helen Wastle (Finley), Raquel Vogel and Connie Villeneuve (Albury Commercial), James Mitchell and David Gibb (The Rock).

Ladies NTP: 7th Emily Ford (Jerilderie).

Ladies Longest Drive: 6th Raquel Vogel (Albury Commercial).

Open NTP: 16th Rozie Kennett (Jerilderie).

Men’s NTP: 5th David Leeds.

Men’s Longest Drive: 12th Luke Keating.

Day 2 – Finley

Winners: Rob and Gai Singleton (Finley), 76/66.75.

Runners-Up: Ryan Donkin and Matthew Wilson (Finley), 74/68.0

Third was Cooper Sutton and Harry Daniel (Finley), 77/68.25, and fourth was Matthew Daniel and Matt Whelan (Finley/Berrigan), 72/69.75.

Ball comp winners were Tony Smith and Helen Wastle (Finley), Warrick Bate and Robyn Bate (Numurkah), Ian and Karen Litchfield (Finley), Luke and Daz Keating (Jerilderie), Maree Doyle and Hannah Kelly (Finley), Geoff and Sandra Wilson (Junee).

Men’s NTPs: 3rd David Gibb (The Rock), 6th Tony Smooth (Finley).

Ladies NTPs: 13th Maree Doyle (Finley), 18th Hannah Kelly.

Day 3 - Berrigan

Winners: Joe and Judy Karaki (Berrigan), 77/65.

Runners-Up: Paul McVicar and Alan Arnold (Berrigan), 76/65.75.

Third was James Mitchell and David Gibb (The Rock), 73/67.5, and fourth was Robert and Gai Singleton (Finley), 77/67.75.

Ball comp winners were Chris Kelly and Sandy Moar (Berrigan), Rod and Carmel Jacobs (Axedale), Steve Senni and Brendan Haintz (Berrigan), Geoff and Sandra Wilson (Junee), Neil and Marise Potter (Chiltern), Geoff Portbury and Rozie Kennett (Jerilderie).

Men’s NTP: William Mason (Numurkah).

Ladies NTP: Judy Karaki (Berrigan).

Men’s Longest Drive: James Mitchell (The Rock).

Ladies Longest Drive: Daz Keating (Jerilderie).

Berrigan

Friday’s winner was Geoff Tait (50-17-33), r/u Lachlan Whelan (39-4-34), putting Steve Senini on 12, ball winner Beau Walliss (45-9.5-35.5),

Saturday’s winner was Joe Nicholls (40-11-29), r/u Chris Kelly (40-7-33), who also won putting with 12, ball winners were Erica Hammond (61-27-34) and Chris Cameron (38-3.5-34.5).

Sunday’s winner Chris Kelly 36 points, r/u Jeff Stein 34 and ball winner was Neil Graham 31.

Next Sunday is a Trade Day - Jimmy Walliss day, 2-person Ambrose, arrange your own partner, all welcome.

Finley

The women played stroke last Wednesday for trophies from Three Girls.

Gail Singleton finished with 71 net to come in as the winner, with Helen Wastle on 73, and Sue Simpson with 74 net as winners in the ball competition.

The putting competition was won by Sue Simpson with 29 putts.

Barry Wilson carded a winning score of 38 points when the men played stableford last Wednesday.

NTP on the 18th was Paul Beaver, and ball competition winners were John Taylor 36, Bo Makkinga 36, Billy Smith 35, and Bill O’Connell who finished with 34 stableford points.

The last round of the Winter Series 9 Hole Competition was played on Thursday.

With 21 points, Rob Singleton claimed the day.

Colin McNamara 19, John Taylor 19, and Simon Fuller 17 were winners in the ball competition.

Season end jackpot winner was John Taylor, with a 10 best round average of 18.7 stableford points.

A new summer season competition starts this Thursday with a start time of 3pm.

Baldwin’s Buses provided the trophies when stableford was played on Saturday.

With 43 points, Matt Daniel was the Men’s Division winner with Janet Delmenico on 35 points as winner of the Women’s Division.

NTP on the 18th was Matt Daniel, and on the 13th it was Helen McRae.

Ball competition winners were Matt Whelan 39, Wayne Peasley 39, Rick Shaw 38, John Taylor 37, and Helen McRae who finished with 33 stableford points.

Day two of the 2024 Outback Golf Challenge was played at Finley on Sunday.

Rob and Gai Singleton brought their winning form home from Jerilderie, and with 66.75 net took the day.

Ryan Donkin and Matt Wilson on 68 net were runners-up, Cooper Sutton and Harry Daniel with 68.25 net finished in third place and Matt Daniel and Matt Whelan with 69.75 finished in fourth place.

NTP on the 3rd was David Gibb (The Rock), the 6th Tony Smith, the 13th Maree Doyle, and on the 18th it was Hannah Kelly.

Ball competition winners were Tony Smith and Helen Wastle 70.5, Warrwick and Robyn Bate (Numurkah) 70.5, Ian and Karen Litchfield 70.5, Luke and Darylyn Keating (Jerilderie) 70.75, and Maree Doyle and Hannah Kelly with Geoff and Sandra Wilson each with 71 net.

Only a small field played stableford on Monday.

Trevor McCaw, with 36 points, was the Men’s Division winner with Janet Delmenico claiming the women’s with 32 points.

NTP on the 13th was Janet Delmenico and on the 18th it was John Taylor.

Ball competition winners were Martin Piggin 31, Eric Dean 31 and Joanne Dean with 28 stableford points.

Jerilderie

It was an action-packed week in Jerilderie, both on and off the course, in the lead up to the 2024 Outback Golf Challenge.

Last Wednesday our midweek golfers played medley stableford.

Denise Boland, at her usual consistent best, and Bill Williams enjoyed the on course banter.

Winner was Denise with 35, with Bill runner-up on 32.

NTPs: 7th Julie Sleigh, 13th Denise Boland, 15th Denise Boland.

Saturday was Day 1 of the Outback Golf Challenge.

Jerilderie was well represented with 20 of our players raising their hand to support the event.

Four pairs then went to support Finley (Sunday) and Berrigan (Monday) in their respective daily comps.

Congratulations to Aaron Purcell, Ian Taylor, Luke and Daz Keating, Emily Ford, Geoff Portbury and Rozie Kennett who all featured among daily winners across the three day tournament.

The format for midweek golf on Wednesday will be ladies monthly medal (putts)/medley stroke (putts).

The format for Sunday golf this week will be medley stableford.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the start date of our junior golf clinic will be moved back one week and will now commence Monday, October 21 at 5pm.
