Two of Benalla’s primary schools have enjoyed playing hockey as part of the Sporting Schools program, with Devenish in Term 2 and Australian Christian College, Hume in Term 3.

Coached by Benalla Hockey Club’s Lee Manning, the kids progressed from being “hockey ready” and dribbling the ball to pushing and trapping, stealing, passing and scoring goals.

Getting into the swing of things: Charlie and Shae from Devenish Primary became confident hockey players in Term 2.

Games such as Rob the Nest and Number Hockey were a great way to reinforce the new skills, with What’s the Time, Mr Hockey? a big hit with the Foundation to Grade 2s.

BHC coach Lee Manning said the enthusiasm and skills the kids quickly gained never ceased to amaze her.

“I’m constantly amazed at how quickly kids become great little hockey players! All the groups have had great fun learning new skills,” she said.

Balancing act: Benalla Hockey Club coach Lee Manning shows the ACC Foundation to Grade 2s how to balance the ball.

In Term 4, everyone over 10 years old is welcome to come and try their hands at ‘Fun Summer Hockey 5’s’ from 6pm to 7pm Thursdays at Churchill Reserve.

With teams made up on the night, it’s a fun way to keep fit, learn new skills and enjoy the company of friends over summer.

The Benalla Hockey Club’s 95th birthday is being celebrated at Benalla Bowls Club this Saturday, 17September.
