Euroa has opened up some crucial breathing space on the Allan Matheson Shield ladder with back-to-back wins at the weekend.

A comfortable 24-shot triumph over Mooroopna on the road had Euroa extend the gap between it and bottom-placed East Shepparton to 29 points.

On a slow deck following the Friday night storms, Euroa skipped away to pencil in a 16-93 to 2-69 victory at Mooroopna.

It came on a weekend of Goulburn Valley Playing Area action where Kyabram toughed it out in a thriller against Tatura-Hill Top and Shepparton Golf won the top-of-the-table clash against Shepparton Park.

Euroa skip Ken Sutcliffe said it was a great win for the club in trying conditions.

“It was a good win; both teams were fighting to not be on the bottom,” he said.

“Conditions were tough because of the heavy rain and that slowed it right down, bit of a battle, everyone was in the same boat though.”

Sutcliffe highlighted that the slower green played into the hands of the visitors.

He also praised the efforts of Andy Houston, who returned from a trip overseas.

Houston skipped his rink to a 24-11 win, while Shane Drysdale (33-15) and Sutcliffe (20-19) collected the other two rink wins.

Tony Kingma’s rink suffered a 16-24 defeat to Paul Warren.

“We matched up pretty good and the conditions probably suited us,” he said.

“Three of us got up ... Andy Houston was back from his visit overseas and he came straight back into skipping and had a very strong win.

“Shane had a good win, I just snuck over the line and Tony Kingma went down, but he was up against a very good rink.

“We now take on the top three sides and it’s back to the start of the fixture again with a home game against Golf. They’re a great side ... I wouldn’t go betting money on us, but you never know what can happen.”

Rounding out the remaining games, Tallygaroopna has jumped back up into second spot thanks to a 74-shot drubbing of East Shepparton.

Tally gave the Eagles an absolute shellacking under lights on Friday and ran away to an 18-126 to 0-52 win.

Kyabram sits one point behind Tally in third following its nervous win over the Bulldogs.

Tatura-Hill Top gave the Bombers a fright, but the home side held on for a 16-97 to 2-90 win.

Lastly, Shepparton Golf flexed its muscles to claim a 14-89 to 4-69 triumph over Shepparton Park to remain unbeaten following seven rounds of play.
