Youngsters were treated to a fun, action-packed and short format of hockey last Saturday at Shepparton’s McEwen Reserve with a Hockey 5s come-and-try day.

Each club within the Goulburn Valley Hockey Association was represented across the six hours of entertainment on the fields as talented juniors came to grips with the new format.

Hockey Victoria staff helped conduct and umpire the session.

Those in attendance picked up the modified Hockey 5s, which was first played competitively ahead of the 2014 Youth Olympic Games, with ease.

Hockey 5s incorporates the fundamentals of the sport, however, it is played with fewer players, a smaller playing area and rebound boards on all four sides of the court.

News photographer Megan Fisher attended the day and captured plenty of action.

The GVHA is transitioning all of its junior competitions to the Hockey 5 format — with the season to commence on April 29.

Clubs are still on the hunt for new players and they are encouraged to register at one of their local clubs.
