A cross-town derby underscored the first rolls of the Goulburn Valley Playing Area lower grade weekend pennant season on Saturday.

With clubs launching back onto the greens after a six-month hiatus, Mooroopna Golf hosted its old foe Mooroopna in an electric division three tie that raised some eyebrows.

Golf, after finishing above the Cats last season, went in as slight favourites, but, despite an even 2-2 rink split on the day, Mooroopna prevailed in a 14-75 to 4-65 classic.

Robert McKenzie’s foursome notched a 13-shot victory in the first set of ends and, despite Golf’s resurgence in the third and fourth rinks, Mooroopna claimed its first scalp — and a big one at that — to start its campaign with a sizzle.

In other division three results, Rushworth defeated Avenel 16-101 to 2-66, Eildon beat Shepparton Golf 14-85 to 4-76 and Kyabram edged past Shepparton Park by three shots.

News photographer Rechelle Zammit stopped off at Mooroopna to snap the derby in all of its glory.
