On Wednesday night the world found out something the people of Shepparton already knew: Garang Kuol is a star.
The 17-year-old left some of the world’s best soccer players in his dust at Sydney’s Stadium Australia, with the former Goulburn Valley Sun representing the A-League All-Stars against Barcelona.
Kuol, who has had an incredible debut season for the Central Coast Mariners in the A-League Men competition, was hand picked by A-League commissioner Greg O’Rourke for the side and showed no fear coming off the bench on the big stage.
Replacing fellow Mariner Jason Cummings in the 57th minute, Kuol did not take long to make an impact, slicing through the Barcelona midfield like butter to go on a run reminiscent of his junior soccer days.
Winning the ball inside the All-Stars’ defensive half in the 67th minute, Kuol outmuscled Barcelona’s Antonio Aranda before outpacing speedster Adama Traoré as he steamed towards goal.
Leaving two more defenders in his wake, Kuol attempted an audacious chip, with the ball rolling just wide of the goal.
His second big moment came in the 88th minute, with two shots in quick succession coming agonisingly close to hitting the back of the net; however, in the end it was not to be, with Barcelona winning 3-2.
Speaking to Channel Ten after the game, Kuol said he was unlucky to not score, with the game proving he could play at that level some day.
“It was amazing, as a kid it’s what you dream about, playing these top players,” Kuol said.
“I’ve watched them since I was five, 10, 15, so it was a dream come true.
“This is my dream from when I was younger, so I don’t look back I just look forward.”
After making his A-League Men debut against the Wellington Phoenix on April 5, Kuol became a regular off the bench for the Mariners, scoring four goals and picking up an assist as the team secured a position in the finals.
While the Mariners’ post-season ended in the first week, Kuol was one of many shining lights for the side and after another big performance on Wednesday, he is well and truly in the national spotlight.
Whether it be a move overseas, a call up to an Australian camp or a regular starting position at the Mariners, Kuol’s performance against Barcelona will certainly open doors.
