Nondies-Cohuna look in prime position to press for outright success next week after already gaining first innings points against Cooma.
The ball dominated the bat as 16 wickets fell on an action-packed opening day at Cohuna Recreation Reserve.
Sent into bat, Cooma was on the back foot early doors, slumping to 5-21 following an blistering new-ball burst from Peter Moore and Xavier Wishart.
Moore claimed three victims in that initial spell, including opener Darcy Backway for a duck and the redoubtable Rob Trewin (3).
Teenage talent Wishart took the prized scalp of skipper Ethan Palma-Ludeman for a duck and trapped Cooper Fawcett (3) lbw.
Opener Liam Scopelliti stood tall as the carnage took place around him, and led a rearguard action.
Scopelliti, in his second A-grade season, displayed maturity beyond his years.
He found some allies in Tom Guerra (7) and Russell Napier (5), lifting the total to 62.
Scopelliti had thwarted the hosts for 90 deliveries when Moore, returning to the attack, had him caught for a fine 40.
Cooma could not add much more following his departure and were bowled out for 67 in the 34th over.
The well-travelled Moore again illustrated why he is one of the competition’s leading pacemen taking 4-24 from 14 overs.
Wishart finished with the figures of 3-17 from his 10 overs, while Leigh Johnson (1-7) and Alex Thornhill (1-0 from two deliveries) also featured among the wickets.
Nondies-Cohuna had a couple of nervous moments in pursuit of the modest target.
Thornhill (6) fell early to Ben Napier, but William Wade and Sam O’Shea steadied the ship with a 38-run partnership.
The introduction of Tom Werner broke the stand as he had Wade caught by Scopelliti for 22.
O’Shea (14) soon followed and from 2-55, the home side soon found itself teetering at 6-57.
Guerra (3-28 from eight overs) sparked the collapse, taking the wickets of O’Shea, Angus Donat and Broden Wishart in quick succession.
The experience of Rhys Bradley swung the momentum back in favour of Nondies-Cohuna.
Bradley, ably supported by Xavier Wishart (3no), guided the home side to first innings points and a small lead heading into day two.
Bradley will resume next week on 24.
Guerra was the most successful of the Cooma bowlers, although Palma-Ludeman (1-11 from 10 overs) and Werner (1-2 from four overs) gave nothing away.
