Aces were served and volleys halved as round two of the Goulburn Murray Lawn Tennis Association season took place on Saturday.

After a successful first round, players from the league’s top division — GM1 — were eager to return to the courts for a second time round on a sunny spring day.

Players across the five divisions had their racquets strung tight, cap sizes adjusted and sunscreen slipped, slopped and slapped as they prepared for a cracking day of lawn tennis.

Velvet Tigers were smooth and calm during their scintillating victory over The Valley.

With the sets and rubbers tied at six apiece, the Tigers won by two games (67-69) at Numurkah Lawn Tennis Club.

Tigers’ Ned Nihill was crucial in his side’s victory, winning all three of the rubbers he featured in.

In the other GM1 match, Average Joes defeated Numurkah Warriors in another thriller.

With sets and rubbers again tied at six apiece, Average Joes inched ahead of the Warriors by winning 71 games to 63.

Average Joes’ Nic Gattuso starred for the victors, winning all three of his matches.

The Tigers now sit clear in first place on the ladder on 23 points, closely followed by Average Joes on 22, with The Valley (10 points) and Numurkah Warriors (nine) making up the rear.

In the GM2 Division, the results of the matches had not been confirmed at the time of going to print.
