Another tight tussle involving the Velvet Tigers highlighted the weekend’s Goulburn Murray Lawn Tennis Association fixtures.

The Nathalia-based outfit retained its grip on top spot in the GM1 race, but only barely, winning 6-72 to 6-69 amidst a fierce challenge from Shepparton Lawn The Valley.

Taking three straight ties to hold a slim ascendancy with one mixed doubles rubber remaining, the Tigers scraped to a 6-2 season record after Dean Limbrick and Ashlea Baker avoided the sweep that The Valley needed to snatch an upset.

There was better news for the other Shepparton side, with Average Joes’ 10-92 to 2-52 pummelling of Numurkah Warriors keeping the door open for a shot at further success this season.

Down the order in GM2, Cobram Crocs tasted defeat for the first time in 2023-24 away at Kyabram Bombers, opening up opportunities for a handful of chasing sides.

Speaking of the Crocs, Rechelle Zammit was at Kialla Park Recreation Reserve to snap Cobram’s big GM3 win over Kialla Park-Old Students for The News.
