Two sensational scores from new golfers were the highlight at Deniliquin Golf Club in the past week.
On Saturday Adrian Mulham recorded a massive 51 points to win D-grade, then on Wednesday Graham Flanagan repeated the dose with 51 points to win the day’s C-grade event.
Both have discovered the fun of golf and in one fell swoop have knocked multiple shots off their handicap, though early signs suggest they should continue playing well.
Other highlights have come from local golfers playing in a range of events and national and regional level.
Deniliquin’s leading golfer, Matt Thomas, has won his third consecutive National Left-Handed Golf Championship.
The event was played over four days at Lonsdale Links and Queenscliff Golf Clubs, on the Bellarine Peninsula.
Thomas had the championship well in the bag after an opening round three under par 67, despite a bogey six on his last hole, to lead by nine.
His next three rounds of 73, 76 and 75 were enough to give Matt a seven shot win.
Leigh Chappell also performed well at the championships, finishing runner-up in the Super Vets net event with rounds of 79, 81, 83 and 80.
Other local golfers have also fared well at various events in the past week.
On Saturday Peter Oddy, Andrew Brunker and Bernie Biggs teamed up with Finley’s Colin McNamara to win the Southern Riverina Wellbeing Collaborative charity day at Finley.
A local contingent also travelled to Mooroopna on Monday for the second round of the Goulburn Valley Veterans Association championships.
Garry Baker won the day’s C-grade event with 38 stableford points, while Neil Boswell, John Radeski and Peter Oddy were all winners in the ball competition.
In results on our local course, last Thursday was stableford; the 18 hole winner was Kerran Leetham with 38 points on count back to Vicki Seely, and the 9 hole competition winner was Jennifer Adamson with 20 points from runner-up Marg Marshall 19.
Saturday was also stableford.
A-grade winner was Chris Mitsch 37 on countback to Graeme Willoughby, B-grade winner Barry Barlow 34 from runner-up Colin Drummond 33, C-grade winner Duncan McQuie 41 from runner-up Albert Liebenberg 40 and Adrian Mulham won D-grade with 51 from runner-up Jane Glowrey 40.
On Wednesday, John Penna returned to form with 43 points to win A-grade from runner-up Phil Hodgkinson on 38.
B-grade winner was Geoff McCallum 39 from runner-up Warren Bull 37, and Graham Flanagan’s 51 easily won C-grade from runner-up Leanne Mulham 39.
Coming up we have a four ball best ball event tomorrow, 12 holes par three on Tuesday, stableford on Wednesday, 9 holes stableford and 18 holes versus par on Thursday, then stableford next Saturday.
Please keep in mind the club’s annual general meeting, coming up on Tuesday, December 3 at 7pm in the clubhouse.
Nominations for positions on the Board of Directors are open until Monday, November 25.
This Sunday is Volunteer's Day, when there will be a barbecue to say a big ‘thank you’ to all club volunteers over the past year.
The club could not operate without the amazing volunteer support, and this is a time when the Board expresses appreciation to everyone who helps out.
Friday Night Fun continues this evening, with happy hour from 6pm to 7pm, raffle tickets on sale from 6pm and draws at 7pm.
Quality meals are available at a reasonable price.
