GVBBL ǀ ‘I’m really enjoying it here’: Bermudan Chare Smith plays key role in Hounds’ victory
It is a path few have trodden.
Arriving at Kyabram from Bermuda after six years in England, Hurley’s Hotel Hounds bowler Chare Smith produced a fine performance with the ball in hand on Sunday.
Taking a crucial 4-11 off three overs in his side’s clinical Goulburn Valley Bush Bash League win over Jarvis Delahey Crushers at Cobram Showgrounds, Smith said bowling first played a key role in the result.
“When we got here this morning we got the news that the sprinklers went off (on the pitch), so it was all about winning the toss really,” Smith said.
“And after that we just had to bowl in the right areas and field in the right places, all the catches went to hands, that’s pretty much all you can ask for.”
Enjoying being around the Hounds group, Smith said the team had been on the same wavelength so far in the tournament.
Aiming to help his side lock in a grand final performance, the Bermudan said it was a former teammate that helped bring him to the Goulburn Valley.
“One of the people I played with in England played for Kyabram Fire Brigade a couple of years ago, Tyrone Issitt,” he said.
“He introduced me to Justin Hooper who’s the president at the club and we spoke and I made the move to Australia.
“It’s good (being in Australia), the weather’s good other than the early rain and the floods sort of holding the cricket back a bit, ever since then I can’t complain I’m really enjoying it here.
“We all want to play good cricket and win and have fun at the same time, so when you have a group of guys that all want the same end goal it’s really easy.”
