Echuca hung on to clinch its 11th Goulburn Valley League win of the season on Saturday, narrowly overcoming Shepparton 55-47 in a hard-fought fourth-versus-sixth contest in round 16.

The Murray Bombers were clinical to outlast a plucky Bears outfit, which knew an upset win would all but solidify its finals spot.

But it was Steph Vick’s side that left Deakin Reserve with a vital four points, ensuring it keeps a hold on fourth spot.

Vick told the Riverine Herald a more patient approach to her side’s ball movement helped it get over the line.

“We were quite controlled, which was a big focus for our team recently,” she said.

“We were patient with the ball, trying a few different combinations. Towards the end of the game we dropped a few passes we would usually make.”

Belinda Lees and Jacqueline James were best-on-court for Echuca, along with their coach, who was full of praise for her key contributors.

“Belinda played consistently most of the day, she really controlled the pace of the game,” Vick said.

“Jacqueline James played well in wing defence. Her pressure was excellent.”

For the Bears, young gun Ruby Higgins was among the best for the home side, alongside Ash Cann and Ella Sidebottom.

Meanwhile, Kyabram dealt Benalla’s finals hopes a devastating blow with a a 52-41 win.

The Bombers finally clinched a deserved four points after coming close on numerous occasions in recent outings.

The loss leaves Benalla in ninth, although the Bears’ defeat means it mathematically can still play finals.

Shepparton welcomes the Saints to Deakin Reserve this Saturday for what is a crucial clash for both sides.

Lastly, Mooroopna continued its push for a top two finish with an 87-12 domination of Mansfield.
