Shepparton Bears supporters went home smiling on Friday night, with the Bears getting over the line against neighbour, Shepparton United.

The Bears led at every change in an entertaining Goulburn Valley League clash and despite the scoreline there was plenty of positives for United under the bright lights of Deakin Reserve.

Shepparton’s Anthony Andronaco's seven-goal haul was vital in helping the Bears run out 9.14 (68) to 15.13 (103) victors, however the game was in the balance for the majority of the contest.

Bears coach Ted Lindon said the club was happy with the win.

“I admire the fact the playing group ground out a result in the method that we did but we also know there’s still a lot to improve on,” Lindon said.

“I thought our work aerially in the contest, stoppage work and forward of centre play was a tangible increase from the week before which is pleasing.

“The squad is starting to establish some depth which is encouraging for the next block of games.”

United coach Paul Serra said a more accurate display in front of goal would have provided more pressure for the Bears.

“There was a few patches where they really dominated and scored easily and I think if we can clean those up obviously we’ll stay in games longer,” Serra said.

United was in the game the whole way, however a good spell late in the second and early in the third from the Bears saw them run away with it.

“I think our six-day prep was very good, we had a lot of guys that battled with cramp against the Swans and we got that right,” Serra said.

“It’s more just the concentration for 100 minutes and hitting those targets that are easy to hit, not where the opposition is outnumbering us.

“Our guys, as much as it was a loss, they were not happy with their performance but satisfied, a lot of them haven’t played in front of that sort of crowd so I think they handled that well and Shepparton certainly supported us well, coming up to the clubrooms after the game and kept that vibe going so it was good for Shepparton footy and good for GV footy to have those sort of crowds.”
