While Seymour’s senior football side missed the 2022 Goulburn Valley League finals series in heartbreaking fashion, its reserves continue to fly the maroon, blue and gold flag in September.
And on Sunday afternoon, the Lions moved one step closer to premiership glory, knocking off an ultra-talented Euroa side by 30 points in a second semi-final boilover at Kyabram Recreation Reserve.
A four-goal-to-zip opening quarter laid the platform for the eventual 10.10 (70) to 6.4 (40) triumph as the Lions led for the entirety of proceedings to set up an epic preliminary final clash with Echuca.
Up forward, Harley Taylor-Lloyd (four goals) and Todd Lawrence (three) did the damage for Seymour, while Cooper Lubeck and Lucas Cannizzo were prolific around the ground.
With the wind blowing strongly on an overcast day in Kyabram, the Lions were devastating early, kicking the first four goals of the day to have Euroa in a state of disarray.
In a 25-point hole at the first change, Euroa worked hard to get back into the contest, but could only break even on the scoreboard as the lead remained at 25 points at half-time.
Seymour came out firing in the third term, dominating field position and peppering the sticks as a result.
The Lions added 2.4 for the period and the margin was pushed out to 35 points at three-quarter time, before Euroa ran out the game strongly with three final quarter goals to trim the deficit to an even five goals come the final siren.
Facing another do-or-die scenario next Sunday, if Seymour is to get over the line against Echuca, it will face Kyabram in the grand final the following weekend.
On the netball courts, Seymour’s B-reserve girls punched their ticket into the grand final, defeating Mansfield 49-36 at Mansfield Recreation Reserve on Saturday.
B-grade was unable to join their compatriots in booking a place in the big dance, falling to Rochester 46-42 in a thrilling first semi-final in Mansfield.
Like the Lions’ A-grade side, it will now face Mooroopna in a cut-throat preliminary final next Sunday.
