Leitchville-Gunbower has missed an opportunity to claim its second win of the season, falling to Elmore by 25 points in a performance Bombers coach Tim Bannan described as “disappointing”.
Coming off the back of four games against the Heathcote District league’s top four sides, the Bombers had a chance to pick up a win against an Elmore side with just two wins to its name.
But after a tight first term, the Bloods outscored the Bombers 33 points to eight in the second quarter, kicking four goals to L-G’s one and holding on to that lead to win 7.19 (61) to 5.6 (36).
Bannan offered an honest but blunt assessment of his side’s performance against Elmore.
“It was a pretty disappointing day. It didn’t really look like we were in the game, to be honest,“ Bannan said.
“I thought we had played some good footy in the last month and I thought if we had've played like that against Elmore, we probably would have had a chance to win the game, but we went away from that.
“We went away from playing simple footy. We had a few players try to do a lot themselves instead of looking for that handball release. We tried to break through packs and got caught holding the ball.”
Down by 24 points at the main break, the Bombers outscored Elmore in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.
On a positive note for the Bombers, Bannan said Billy Hawken, Blake Azzopardi, Mitchell Candy and Matthew McLellan were some of the top players for the black, gold and red.
“I thought Billy and Blake were really good and I thought Mitchell Candy was fantastic,” Bannan said.
“It was great to have Matthew McLellan back. He was brilliant across the backline too. He’s come on in leaps and bounds this year.”
Leitchville-Gunbower will end its season with games against White Hills and Heathcote.
