Harness racing returned to Cobram on Friday, with the Cobram Harness Racing Club hosting a nine-race meeting.

Plenty of action occurred both on and off the track throughout the day, with the Julie Douglas trained Ozzie Joy taking out race six, Mel Hingston’s The Constitution winning race eight and Paul Weidenbach’s Binno Major picking up the win in race four.

Cobram Harness Racing Club secretary Adam Rudd said the event went well, with great weather helping the occasion.

“There was great racing, quick times and we had a cracker day, which helped,” Rudd said.

“It felt like a first day of spring really, even though it wasn’t, that’s what it felt like — the sun was out shining.

“It was very positive with the weather the way it was, it was really good racing, the track raced fast and everyone that was there had a great time.”

Along with the successful race day, the club welcomed a new major sponsor on board over the weekend.

The sponsorship is another positive sign for the future, and with plenty of racing action pencilled in for this year, Rudd encouraged people to head along to a meet.

“Financially it’s a great help to have a major sponsor come on board,” Rudd said.

“I encourage people to get along, it’s a great facility in town and obviously provides the industry some great racing and a chance for the locals to be able to come and enjoy it.

“We’ve got some big meetings coming up in the future with our cup on the eighth of January and we’re having a ‘celebrate Christmas’ meeting on the ninth of December.

“The club is heading in the right direction.”

For those who cannot wait until December to get their racing fix, the club’s next meet is scheduled for Thursday, September 22.
