Legs cooked, lungs burning, the final siren was music to the ears of Congupna’s Sam Buxton.

The Road’s gun utility produced a Herculean effort during Congupna’s thrilling one-point victory over Finley in the Murray Football League grand final at Moama Recreation Reserve.

Starting in defence and then moving into the ruck, Buxton was thrown about during the tough and tight decider.

But it didn’t faze him, as Buxton flew through pack after pack, clunking strong contested marks for Congupna around the ground, before battling Finley’s Lachlan Hawkins in the ruck throughout the tense dying stages.

Buxton’s courage and influence on the contest was rewarded with the best-on-ground medal, celebrating him for his vital contribution to the Roaders’ maiden Murray Football League premiership win.

After the match, Buxton emphasised how relieved he was that the game didn’t continue into overtime.

“(I am) totally and completely exhausted - overwhelmed,” Buxton said.

“(I’m) very emotional.

“It is just really awesome to do it for the club after so many years.

“I’m speechless, really.”

Having signed on for Congupna during the pandemic, Buxton said he quickly fell in love with The Road’s culture and community.

“(I’ve) been here four years,” he said.

“The most special thing about Congupna is that it is so family-orientated; there is no-one that doesn’t feel connected.

“I have never been closer with a bunch of blokes and a group so large.

“It is such a great feeling and everyone is always so happy to be (at the club).

“Turn up to footy training and you are there with 50 mates; it is awesome.”

In a team-first game, Buxton is a team-first player, as demonstrated by his acts of courage during the grand final.

While receiving the best-on-ground award was not a goal of Buxton’s, the star utility said it was special to be given it after such a big match.

“I’m not about it for the personal accolades... but it is awesome,” he said.

“I must admit it is a pretty awesome feeling.

“It is the cherry on top.

“Big celebrations tonight and for the next week, probably.”
