'I’ve never seen a goal like that’: Alou Kuol produces goal of the year contender for Australia

The Goulburn Valley Suns’ product had his face shot around the world on Saturday night, with footage of the 20-year-old’s ‘Scorpion’ goal going viral.

In an incredible piece of athleticism, Kuol defied gravity by swinging his leg over his head to put the ball into the back of the net, with the challenging finish already touted as a goal of the year contender.

The finish came in first half injury time of Australia’s second group game of the under-23 Asian Cup tournament, with Kuol starting up front for the green-and-gold against Iraq.

While the match ended in a one-all draw, with Kuol coming off in the second half, it is yet another highlight for what has been an incredible couple of years for Kuol.

Speaking to www.socceroos.com.au after the game, Kuol said the draw was a disappointing result.

“We were up and we had to get on with it, but in the end Iraq were lucky to get away with a point,” Kuol said.

He said his goal was pure instinct, with little else able to be done in the situation.

“I was running forward and saw the ball go behind me, and I just thought ‘yeah, let’s do it’,” he said.

“Out of 10, I’d give it (the goal) a five. That’s normal. Just give me the same ball and I’ll do it again!

“I’m lying, that was nice.”

Kuol is plying his trade on loan at German club SV Sandhausen this season and his goal will only garner more interest in the attacker.

With one last group game to go against Jordan, he will be hoping to produce another moment to help his nation make the knockout rounds.
