Jan’s recognition caps off reunion

Several important stories from Deniliquin District Cricket Association history were shared and celebrated over last weekend’s reunion.

One special ceremony held was in honour of Jan Rotherham.

For her wonderful efforts and contribution in providing afternoon tea to hundreds of past Deniliquin cricketers, the former DDCA canteen was named in her honour.

The canteen no longer exists, since replaced with the new Deniliquin Rovers Football & Netball Club changerooms.

Not wanting the dedication to be forgotten, reunion organisers arranged for a new commemorative plaque for Jan to be made and placed in recognition.

The Rotherham family was invited specifically to be present, with the re-dedication ceremony taking place during the afternoon tea break of Saturday’s Deni Rhinos versus Barooga A-grade game.

Both Brian and Phil Rotherham were long-time players for West in the DDCA, while Phil and his sons Dylan and Ryan were also recent past players for the Deni Rhinos.

Also attending on Saturday afternoon, and headlining Saturday night’s Sportsman’s Night, were cricketing legends Aaron Finch, Andrew McDonald and Tim Ludeman, with Rhinos president Tim Hillier specifically thanking Ben Milliken who was “instrumental in bringing their visit to Deni” .

Several former DDCA players, officials and supporters enjoyed the weekend, including much of the 1968-69 Mayrung A-grade premiership side, who claimed a narrow eight-run victory over Morago-Wanganella.

Hillier also paid tribute to DDCA legend Jim Jennings, who he described as “95 years young” with 248 A-grade games for West under his belt and “800 wickets with his wily off-spinners”. It prompted a standing ovation from those gathered on Saturday night.

Hillier also thanks everyone involved in the well-attended weekend of events.

“I acknowledge the efforts of my organising committee, who have worked tirelessly to bring this evening and the weekend activities to fruition.

“Brad Todd, the Rhinos secretary, Anthony Bradley and Chris Pyle - all past DDCA players and foundation members and current players of the Deni Rhinos - thank you so much, to you all.”

“Thank you also to Owen Edwards, Jamie Tasker, Gerry ‘Cowboy’ Corrigan, Michael Norman, Wayne Bradley, Ash Germano and Greg Munro.

“All these gentlemen worked together to make this weekend happen, and we are so appreciative of your wonderful contribution.

“Thank you also to everyone who has supplied a vast range of DDCA memorabilia, which is on display in the new clubrooms at Memorial Park.”

DDCA Life member Wayne Bradley said the reunion was “hugely successful” celebrating Deniliquin cricket past, present and future.
