Josh Waight appointed director of coaching by Greater Shepparton Basketball Association

The next step: Josh Waight has accepted the role as director of coaching at Greater Shepparton Basketball Association.

Shepparton Gators coach Josh Waight has broadened his coaching repertoire, landing a brand new role within the region.

Greater Shepparton Basketball Association (GSBA) has appointed Waight as its director of coaching for the upcoming Junior Gators representative season, which runs through summer.

Following an internal search and review of the 2022-23 season by the Junior Gators committee, the need for a specialist lead role was identified according to spokesperson Mary-Ann Barton.

“The need for a director of coaching was identified as the number one priority for the committee,” she said.

“The director will work with our coaches to establish a consistent and high standard for Shepparton basketball.”

Waight accepts the job as an ideal candidate within the association.

In tandem with a successful history with the Gators’ men’s outfit, which currently tops the Big V division one ladder, Waight has led Victoria Country under-16s on a number of occasions at the Australian Junior Championships.

With no time to waste, Waight voiced his excitement at taking on the role with both hands and getting started right away.

“I’m looking forward to working with everyone to develop not only our playing style, but a successful culture, values and behaviours for the Shepparton Gators program,” he said.

“Over the last week, I’ve chaired an interview panel as we’ve recruited for our junior Gators coaches for this forthcoming season.

“We will make these appointments soon and then I will spend some time with the successful coaches before player try-outs at the end of July.”

Driving basketball forward is a key target of the GSBA, with the fresh position an indicator of the association’s pledge.

President Peter Sutherland said GSBA’s aim was to accelerate the growth and standard of the sport in Greater Shepparton.

“Despite the challenges of COVID, the GSBA has seen a strong return of players to our great game of basketball,” Sutherland said.

“Interest by the kids into basketball is at an all-time high and Josh’s appointment will help with their development and meet their representative aspirations”.
