A rising Katamatite football talent was recognised for his efforts last Monday night, with Mitch Ward taking out the Picola District Football League’s under-17 best and fairest award.
The up-and-coming midfielder stood out above the rest across the length of the season, polling an impressive 34 votes on his way to best and fairest honours.
A vote down with one round to go, Ward said it was good to win the award, with the talent acknowledging his teammate’s assistance.
“I just got fed and looked good I guess,” Ward said.
“I only got up by two votes over Geoff Montgomery and Cam Wills.
“I led most of the night and then we had the bye in round 17 and the bloke behind me went in front of me, but he didn’t poll in the last round and I got the three.”
Ward outlined his ball use and fitness as two of his strengths on the field, with a “bit of flashiness” also helping him stand out.
The 17-year-old kicked 28 goals for the season, joking that he “could’ve kicked more” if he could kick a set shot.
“I just have the ability to get around tackles and skip around a few packs,” he said.
“We (Katamatite) had a good year and finished third, we got knocked out of finals in straight sets though.”
Not only did Ward stand out for the Tigers’ under-17s side, but the rising star also played eight senior games.
He thanked the club for giving him the opportunity to play at the senior level, with senior coach Jedd Wright letting him play in the right position for the firsts team.
“It’s a big step up, but I enjoy it, it’s fun,” he said.
A talent for the future, Ward will look to grow his game time in the senior squad next season, with the player hoping to continue his development.
“I’m trying to get as high and far as I can with my footy,” he said.
