Seven rounds down into the Kyabram District League A-grade season and with only two wins on the board, this weekend is an important clash for Girgarre.

Despite sporting a 2-5 record, the Roos’ coach Holly Nelson (nee Butler) believes the season is still alive for her outfit.

The Roos, who sit 12th on the ladder, kept their finals aspirations alive following their triumph over Murchison-Toolamba in round six.

Girgarre now heads to Stanhope to take on the seventh-placed Lions.

“Our season wasn’t really going to plan, but the girls did a really good job last weekend over Murch,” Nelson said.

“All of our systems seem to be coming together and our defensive unit led the way.

“Ellie Walsh, Libby Pangrazio and Sarah Thorpe were all very solid for the entire game. They created turnovers and provided plenty of opportunities at the other end for our attackers.

“Jacqui (Gahan) was best-on in goals, it’s been great having her back in the side.”

Gahan returned to the Roos’ line-up after a long absence through injury.

The talented goaler injured her Achilles last season and made a return in round five.

Gahan’s inclusion came a week after Nelson injured her ankle in round four against Shepparton East.

Coincidentally, the playing coach hurt her ankle at the same part of the court that Girgarre’s 2021 coach, Abby Pettifer, suffered a season-ending ankle injury.

Nelson expects to be available following the upcoming general bye.

The reigning Warren Family Medal winner is hopeful that the wins will be flowing once her strongest seven are back on the court.

“We know we have a challenging month ahead, but we have got a lot of belief going forward,” Nelson said.

“Our season is still alive. Our goal is to play finals and hopefully we’ll have our strongest side in after the bye.”

Around the courts, unbeaten Nagambie is at home to Undera, while Lancaster plays host to Murchison-Toolamba.

Dookie United, fresh off an 87-22 win over Rushworth, is at home to Violet Town.

Merrigum must face premiership favourite Tallygaroopna at home, while Shepparton East takes on Rushworth.

Lastly, Avenel welcomes Longwood in the Sunday fixture.
