Thursday Ladies commenced last week with 11 teams which is an increase of 3 teams from last season.

It was fantastic to see so many new and returning faces on court with the courts filled with banter and laughter.

The standard of the tennis was also very high considering many players hadn’t had a hit since last season.

Teams have retro ice cream names with much conversation surrounding which was the best ice cream back in the day.

Hearts proved too strong for Frosty Fruits winning all of their sets. Sandra Heaney, Chris Hawkins, Olivia Lewis and Renee Byrne all played well for their first hit.

Calippos and Barney Bananas had a great battle before Calippos came out on top 4 sets to 2. Kirsten Williams was best on court to be undefeated.

Lifesavers had a good night against Splices to win 5 sets to 1. Win Win Htwe and Lara Angwin were both in great form to win all of their sets.

Bubble-o-Bills and Sunnyboys had the closest rubber of the night with each team winning 3 sets before Bubble-o-Bills were declared the winners by 2 games. The Sunnyboys Lucy Bassett was the player of the night winning all of her matches.

In the final match of the night Paddle Pops won 4 sets to 2 against Zooper Doopers. Amy Lairson hit the ball beautifully to not lose any sets.

The ladder after Round 1 is Hearts 8, Lifesavers 7, Calippos 6, Paddle Pops 6, Bubble-o-Bills 5, Drumsticks 4, Sunnyboys 3, Zooper Doopers 2, Barney Bananas 2, Splices 1, Frosty Fruits 0.

Play will continue this Thursday. Fill-ins are often needed and names can be easily added to this list.

“Moira Shire please can we have more courts.” This was the sentiment as the courts were overflowing with players on Saturday morning.

The Hot Shots players have already shown immense improvement and the coaches have been very impressed with their enthusiasm. It is fantastic to see so many parents involved with the program.

The coaching program organised by Club Coach Greg Duns was good fun. The players are split into small groups and are developing their skills to be able to play matches.

The number of players participating in matches has reached an unprecedented level.

As a result of this it is even more essential that all players register at the Tournament Box prior to 8.50am.

It will take quite a while to write out the groups each week and any latecomers will not be able to be entered. If you are going to be late, please text Jason before 8.50am.

On Saturday the players were split into groups of 4 with three sets of doubles played.

Boys group winners were Lenny Robinson, Jack Bruce, Jimmy Robinson, Nate Rudd, Thomas Lawrence, Finn Angwin, Flynn Connell, Tom Hemphill, Edward Withers, Ernie Buerckner and Jack Carmichael.

Girls group winners were Lily Lewis, Billie Prestage, Lara Angwin, Taylah Chessells, Sophie Smith, Maeve Inchbold, Natalie Linehan, Georgie Smith, Ella Smith, Annabelle Buerckner, Billie-Jo Buerckner and Ruby O’Kane.

Just a reminder that there is no junior tennis on this Saturday due to the long weekend.

Wilby Tennis competition

Round 3 of the Wilby and District Tennis Association was completed over the weekend. Conditions were perfect for tennis and as a result the play was a of a high standard.

Burramine took on Wilby on the grass at Yarrawonga with the courts looking in amazing condition. Wilby’s men were in good form winning 5 sets to 1 with the father-son combination of Mike and Viktor Lairson dominating the courts.

It was a reversal in the ladies Burramine’s Tess Bassett, Kirsty Skene, Olivia Lewis and Narelle Bassett all undefeated to win all 6 sets. The mixed was a tight affair with the sets split before Burramine claiming this section by a single game. Overall Burramine won by 15 games to claim the points 6 to 2.

At Lonsdale Reserve, Mulwala Gold hosted Telford. The mens section was tight with 3 sets all but Mulwala Gold winning on games by 10 with Telford’s Andrew Banks not dropping a set.

Telford’s ladies were too strong winning 5 sets to 1 with Angela Mitchell and Emma Pearce both winning all of their sets. Telford proved too strong in the mixed to win 3 sets to 1. Telford home on games by 8 in a close evening of tennis. Telford 6 points to 2.

Mulwala Green made the journey out to play Tungamah Green. Tungamah’s men as usual were very strong with Josh Buerckner, Tom Wren and young guns Xav Chessells and Harry Wren all undefeated.

In the ladies Tungamah also played very well to win 5 sets to 1. Sisters Ellie Buerckner and Billie-Jo Buerckner both won all their matches. Tungamah won 3 sets to 1 to finish the night. Overall Tungamah Green won by 50 games to claim all 8 points.

Unfortunately, preparations for harvest meant that Savernake couldn’t field a side on Saturday against Tungamah Gold.

After round 3 the ladder is Telford 18, Tungamah Green 18, Wilby 16, Tungamah Gold 14, Burramine 12, Mulwala Gold 11, Mulwala Maroon 7 and Savernake 0.

This week Mulwala Maroon host Savernake, Tungamah Gold will take on Burramine, Wilby will welcome Mulwala Gold and Tungamah Green finish off the round.

Goulburn Murray Tennis

The Goulburn Murray Tennis Association played round 3 on Saturday. Local clubs Numurkah and Cobram have been very generous in the support of Yarrawonga players keen to play at a higher standard.

In Division 1 Numurkah played Shepparton. In beautiful conditions Shepparton gave the reigning premiers Numurkah a tennis lesson to win 11 sets to 1. Numurkah’s only set was won by Lucy Bassett who won 8/2.

In Division 2 Numurkah’s team had a much better day to win 7 sets to 4. Tess Bassett was best on court winning all of her sets comfortably.

Cobram visited Kyabram and in a very close battle Cobram won 6 sets to 5. Hayley Bennett played very well to win all of her matches the last with Daryl Bennett in the mixed. Making his debut Xav Chessells played very well and certainly will be a star of the future.

Tatura 30+ Doubles Tournament

The third tournament of the North East Veterans was held in Tatura on Sunday. Yarrawonga was very well represented and continues to be the biggest supporter of this tournament series. As usual Tatura had a fantastic feast to complement a great day of tennis.

Returning to the series John Brunner won his card as he usually tends to. Anne Tyrell and Maurie Tyrell both played very well to win their groups and ensuring a double celebration. Mike Lairson continued his consistent run finishing runners up.

The next tournament in the series is in Wodonga on November 10.
