In the same week that he was named the Picola District Football League’s best-and-fairest, Waaia’s Ash Holland produced a best afield grand final performance.
The talented ruckman was everywhere at Katunga Recreation Reserve on Saturday, feeding his teammates the ball out of the ruck and providing plenty of man power.
Speaking after the Bombers’ grand final victory over Tungamah, Holland said it was really good to be part of the Waaia group this season.
“We’re a tight-knit group and a community as well,” Holland said.
“There’s a lot of Waaia folk here (at the game) and backing us all as well, it’s a tight group, tight club, tight community, so it means a fair bit to the people of Waaia.”
With Waaia not lifting a senior premiership since 2005, Holland said he was “super proud” to play his role in the successful season.
“You go out there, play your part and to do it well it means a lot,” he said.
“It just means a hell of a lot to the people of Waaia, so it’s good to get the reward for the playing group and Waaia.”
Voted best-on-field in the title decider by the umpires, the Bombers’ big man collected 22 votes across the home and away season to pick up the Pearce Medal.
This includes six best-on-ground performances throughout the year, with the best afield grand final display adding to an already impressive haul of silverware.
