Returning to the court after consecutive bye weeks, Echuca United recorded perhaps its most significant result to date this season.
While the Eagles had at one point won seven games on the hop, they entered the clash having lost the last two, and would need a big effort to take down third-placed Mulwala.
It was an enormous first quarter from the Eagles, who raced out to a 17-to-four lead at quarter-time, stunning the Lions and grabbing a tight hold on the match.
It was one they would not let go of despite Mulwala making it more of a contest, claiming a strong 41-32 victory away from home.
Echuca United co-coach Kate Donehue was pleased with the efforts of her side following a fortnight on the sidelines.
“It was a super win yesterday after a few weeks off,” Donehue said.
“We wanted to capitalise after our games against Moama and Deniliquin, which were close losses. We had a 17-4 first quarter which set us up for the game, and it was really goal for goal after that.”
There were a few standout performers in the win, although Donehue praised the entire squad for the discipline they showed.
“Jordy Hay was our best on, and she combined so well with Kate Pearson in our attacking end,” she said.
“It was great to watch our girls move the ball up and down the court, they remained disciplined when it counted and didn’t buy into the pressure that Mulwala applied, it was a great team effort.”
The Eagles sit sixth after the win and will face Finley (3-10) next week, as they look to chase down the three sides sitting just one win ahead of them.
