In the fight of the felines, both sides were looking to take a swipe at their opponent’s minor premiership aspirations.

The match-up was set to be tense as a battle of second and first place was on the cards with Seymour being the slight underdogs.

If recent form was anything to suggest this was going to be no pushover for the Cats as Seymour clawed a comprehensive victory over fellow title contenders Euroa in the previous round.

The stage was set at Kings Park and the home court advantage paid dividends as Seymour took its chances in a low-scoring affair to win 35 to 29.

Ellie Fuhrmeister’s side has now extended its winning streak out to five games and defeated its two main rivals for top spot in doing so.

While the Magpies sit atop the table on for and against goals, the Lions and Cats also have 48 points on the ladder and are looking to stalk their rivals down in the final three rounds of the season.

With another split round in the GVL the Lions will look to rest before a tough run home against three top eight sides — Shepparton Swans, Tatura and Shepparton Bears.
