Lionesses hunt in packs to capture their prey, with each predator’s individual positioning and performance vital to a successful outcome.
On Saturday afternoon in the Goulburn Valley League, the Seymour Lions’ A-grade side was living up to its namesake with a fierce pack mentality on show.
In a match-up that saw the sides coming into the game equal on points on the ladder, it was the Lions who landed a lethal 34-52 win.
Ellie Fuhrmeister’s side climbed the table into second with the win and extended its winning streak to four games after tumultuous back-to-back losses in rounds nine and 10.
Fuhrmeister was pleased with the result against an opposition that has been playing well all season.
“I think it took the full effort of all seven of the girls out on court and on the bench to try and get on top of them,” Fuhrmeister said.
“I think we just connected really well and our ball speed was really good.
“We’ve been building towards putting out a really good performance and I think it all came together in last week’s game.
“The combinations really came together and I think the momentum of last week’s game was carried into this week against Euroa, who are a really, really good side.
“I was really pleased with the girls’ efforts to keep pushing and get such a nice lead.
“I think you couldn’t go past Sarah Szczykulski (for best-on). She was just so scary out on court, she gained so much ball, she was everywhere.”
The Lions return to their home court on Saturday as they come up against top-of-the table Mooroopna in what is shaping up as a grand final preview.
Fuhrmeister said it would be a close game against tough opposition that handed the Lions their first loss of the season.
“It’ll be good to have another battle out on court,” Fuhrmeister said.
“I think it’s always scary, but I think it’s good to play top sides because it shows where you’re really sitting leading into finals.
“We’ll hopefully be able to carry this connection again from this week into next week and keep building on and improving on the few little things that didn’t go our way.”
