Lions’ slow start costs them against Bombers

Seymour was made to pay for a slow start against Kyabram on Saturday, August 17, as it fell to a 16-point defeat.

With the Bombers guaranteed to play finals in the Goulburn Valley League, Seymour travelled to Kyabram Recreational Reserve as underdog in a game played in blustery, cold conditions.

Heading into the game, Lions coach Ben Davey said the boys were in with a real chance.

And the Lions should have felt they had every right to compete, having fallen short by just six points in round six when they hosted the Bombers at Kings Park.

Kyabram showed its class from the onset with a seven-goal-to-one first quarter, but the Lions were able to stem the bleeding, cutting the margin to six goals at the half.

Searching for answers over the break, Seymour clearly found them with a five-goal-to-one third term to cut the margin to two straight kicks heading into the last quarter.

Unfortunately for the Lions, the underdog was not to have its day, as the home side weathered the storm to win 13.15 (93) to 11.11 (77).

Nathan Beattie, Tom Maloney, Riley Mason, Thomas Martin and Ben Coone were the Lions’ best, with Jack Murphy topping the individual scoreboards for either side with three goals.

Davey said the loss was disappointing.

“The opening run from them is what made the difference in the game,” he said.

The Lions will now dust themselves off and look to finish off an inconsistent season strongly against Mooroopna at Kings Park on Saturday, August 24.
