The Australian Open bowls has started on the Gold Coast.

The men’s singles sectional play was completed with Moama bowlers Kevin Anderson and Peter Campbell winning through to the first round of knockout action.

Anderson produced a clean sweep of his three matches.

He opened with a 21-2 dispatching of Allan Corneliusen (Leeton), then followed up with an equally impressive 21-4 win against Orange Ex Services bowler Trevor Baker.

Win number three came with a 21-8 victory over Western Australian Brad White.

Campbell also progressed to the first round after three consecutive wins.

He opened with a 21-12 defeat of New South Welshman John Price, then defeated Queenslander Adam Tozer (21-13) and sealed his spot in the knockout stage by accounting for Garry Lasky (Middle Park) 21-17.

Both Anderson and Campbell have drawn a bye in the opening round of the knockout.

That is not the case for Mathoura’s Michael Humphreys, who also won through to that stage of the tournament.

Humphreys will play Wilson Alexander (Paradise Point) at Club Robina on Saturday after a thrilling sectional battle.

He started with a 21-19 defeat of New South Welshman Brian Patton, then proved too strong for Laidley bowler Doug McGuire, winning 21-9.

Despite a 21-16 loss to Ken Ashford (Hamilton, Queensland) in his final sectional match, Humphreys progressed due to superior shot percentage ahead of Patton, who also won two games.

Moama ace Cassandra Millerick, playing alongside her twin sister Bolivia, will have to rely on next best qualifiers in the women’s pairs.

The event commenced on Monday with 27 sections taking to the green.

The Millericks dropped a game to Jessica Parolin and Maria Rigby, who topped the group unbeaten.

A shot difference of plus 33 will hold the Millericks in good stead however.
