Longwood was a hive of activity at the weekend as Coburg landed in town for its pre-season camp.

The VFL outfit used the facilities at Longwood Football Netball Club for an intraclub match in preparation for the 2022 season.

Coburg’s appearance marked the second year in a row that the Lions descended on Longwood.

Overcast and humid conditions greeted the Melbourne outfit at the home of the Redlegs for the intraclub hit-out on Saturday.

It was a memorable day out for two Longwood talents.

Tim Mitchell and Kobe Galvin had the opportunity to run out and rub shoulders with some stars of the VFL.

Longwood president Ricki Shiner said the return of Coburg was a great success.

“The crowd at the game was huge, it was a really strong crowd,” Shiner said.

“It was a combination of campers for the festival (Longwood Beer, Wine and Cider festival), local football supporters and Coburg supporters.

“It was a huge success, the whole day was massive.”

Shiner revealed that Coburg already has wheels in motion for a return to Redlegs Stadium next year.

“Coburg is already planning 2023, which is pretty exciting,” he said.

“They love it up here; The fact that they can come up, have the run of the place and enjoy the relaxed environment.

“I’ve mentioned it before, but it’s such a great experience for our players and coaches who learn so much from being in that environment.”

The match was played for the Chris “Narra” Lalor Cup, named after the Coburg life member and Longwood supporter.

The pre-season match was a vital piece of Coburg’s preparation for the upcoming VFL campaign.

The Lions will now select their squad with the season due to roll around later this month.
