A come-from-behind victory has seen Tallygaroopna lift the Goulburn Valley Playing Area weekend division five title in style.
The newly-crowned champion was simply too strong for opponent Mooroopna Golf on Saturday, winning three rinks to Golf’s one.
Despite this favourable number, the game was close all the way through, with Tallygaroopna’s final score of 97, just too strong for Mooroopna Golf which finished on 85.
Team manager and Tallygaroopna’s rink three skip Ronald Jones was more than happy with the side’s performance.
“We’re all elated because some of us are getting on in age and we’ve got a few young ones amongst us and we’re very happy to have got over the line yesterday,” Jones said.
“Halfway through the game we were down, so we dug in and got ourselves up at the end of the day and that’s the main thing.”
Rink two was the only rink Tallygaroopna dropped, with a big 38-7 win to Golf bringing the scores closer together.
“We had one rink get up by 18, one by 16 and the other by nine and we covered the 31 loss, so we were very lucky,” he said.
The win was particularly special for Jones, with son Dean Jones taking out the division three title on the same day.
“It’s a great feeling around the club, I’ve been out at Tallygaroopna playing on and off for 40 years, since the late ’80s, so I’m very happy and to have my son playing out there as well is very good,” he said.
“It’s unbelievable, it’s pretty hard to put into words, it gets emotional at times.
“Back in the early ’90s I was president out there and now my son Dean is president, so it is a really fabulous feeling.”
Jones said since the club moved into the Goulburn Valley Playing Area it had picked up a lot more players, all of who were quality both on and off the field.
“We just have a great time, we’re all mates, it doesn’t matter whether you’re 20 or 80, were all mates,” he said.
“We’re just one big happy family and that’s what makes it so easy to go out and bowl.”
