Twelve months ago, Echuca’s flag was a mixture of happiness and disappointment for midfielder Jack McHale.
The Murray Bombers midfielder was ruled out via suspension before last year’s grand final, but there was no mistaking the joy in his face after joining his beloved Echuca for this year’s 36-point win over Kyabram.
He used that to fuel the fire this year, and his teammates pulled through when it counted for him and Mitch Kemp, who both missed last year’s triumph.
“I’m just so proud of the boys there was a big emphasis on doing it for me and Kempy (Mitch Kemp),” McHale said.
“They just worked so hard for us and it makes it all the more sweeter.
“It was a tough time last year but this year makes it even better. I was definitely a bit nervous playing the semi-final but once we got here to put my head over it… I didn’t want to waste this opportunity.”
Echuca slammed on eight goals to one in the third quarter to put the game to bed, and for McHale it came as little surprise after being tested by the Bombers.
“It’s just the story of our year, we just come out and kick goals,” he said.
“Smeagle (Simon Maddox) gave us a good rev up at half-time and we knew we had to lift. That’s exactly what happened.
And what does the club mean to the beloved Murray Bombers?
You could see the answer to that question written in his face and those of a bustling room of supporters post-game.
“It’s family now,” he said.
“Once you win one of these they are all your brothers. We have been for a while but this is just icing on the cake.”
