Mooroopna’s fairytale Goulburn Valley Playing Area division three midweek bowls season came to a triumphant end on Tuesday, March 15, securing the premiership with a 16-99 to 0-47 rout of Kyabram at Shepparton Park Bowls Club.

Coming into the finals series in fourth position after qualifying by the barest of margins, the Cats caught fire at the right time of year, reeling off a pair of impressive victories against Nagambie and East Shepparton to qualify for the big dance.

And on grand final day, Mooroopna produced its final masterpiece, sweeping the rinks against a highly-fancied Kyabram side in what was a complete blue and white procession.

Mooroopna team manager Lyn Thatcher struggled to put into words the joy of coming away with the title.

“It is an absolutely fantastic feeling (to come away with the win),” Thatcher said.

“We were lucky to get into the four to be honest, then we just got on a roll and built the momentum to what was a great grand final day.

“It was a good team effort, we got out early which was helpful to us, and we tried to hold on to that lead, so it was just great to get over the line in the end.”

In what was a complete domination by the Cats, Margaret Florence was the star, inspiring a 40-15 win, while fellow skips Berna Nichols and Jan Macfadyen followed suit with dominant 32-16 and 27-16 victories respectively.

The win was extra special for Thatcher, who played in honour of late husband Glenn, a stalwart of the Mooroopna Bowls Club.

“I lost my husband 19 months ago, so we did it for him,” she said.

“I had his name tag in my pocket the entire match and it was just great to come away with the win and honour him.”
