The next crop of Goulburn Valley football pedigree aiming for a shot at the 2027 AFL Draft has been named.

Murray Bushrangers released a 47-strong list of under-16 players hailing from the Goulburn Valley and Border North East regions chosen for pre-season duties.

Following a rigorous selection process that included an athletic performance profile testing day ran by Rookie Me, more than 140 nominated players were whittled down by almost 100 to form the squad.

Fourteen players from 10 of the wider Goulburn Valley region clubs were selected to join the Bushies as preparations begin for the 2025 Coates Talent League season.

Shepparton-Notre Football Club features the most from the GV region with three, including Alex Whitlock, the younger brother of potential first round draft picks Jack and Matt Whitlock.

Meanwhile, AFL talent ambassador Kevin Sheehan has named some current Bushrangers with GV backgrounds in his draft analysis for 2024.

Benalla product Joe Berry was rated highly by the ex-Geelong footballer, referencing his game-breaking qualities as an undersized forward.

“A crafty left-footed small forward who has proved to be one of the most dangerous players of his type in this year’s draft pool,” he said.

“Presents on the lead with real speed, works hard up the ground to win the ball, has elite one-touch hands at ground level and innate goal sense.

“Booted an equal-high nine goals during the National Championships and averaged 13.2 disposals and three tackles to win All Australian honours.

“Was also star for the Murray Bushrangers during the Coates Talent League season, averaging 14 disposals and kicking 27 goals, which included four bags of four.

Sheehan also gave Shepparton Swans product and standout Bushrangers utility Oliver Warburton top marks upon examining players of his ilk in the draft pool.

“A versatile defender and midfielder who finds the footy in any role he plays then uses his speed and neat disposals skills to create opportunities for his team,” he said.

“Was a model of consistency for Victoria Country at the National Championships, averaging 18.5 disposals at 82 per cent efficiency and was prolific in seven appearances for the Murray Bushrangers, averaging 26 disposals.”
