Wet and wild weather put a stop to the first round of the Murray Valley Cricket Association on the weekend, with matches called off across the competition.

Four matches were pencilled in to be played, however with fields unsuitable for action, the decision was made to cancel them all.

MVCA president Anthony Holmes said it was disappointing to delay the start of the season.

“We tried out hardest to get the games going,” Holmes said.

“We did an inspection Saturday morning and three out of the four grounds were definitely no chance of playing Saturday so we called it off.

“Barooga had got their number two ground ready and it probably could have played with a late start but with the other grounds it was just decided to call off the whole round.”

The cancellation means the competition will jump straight into round two this weekend, with it easier to move on than reschedule the whole competition.

“We’ve just got no room to try and fixture that round back in somewhere so it will just be all draws for them games and we’ll try to hopefully get on for round two,” Holmes said.

“Which with another bit of rain forecast for Wednesday, Thursday and a bit Friday will be a bit interesting again.”

Following two seasons of COVID-19 delayed starts, cricketers will once again be disappointed to have the season pushed back, however if all goes well the teams will hit the fields this weekend.

Round two is set to see Barooga take on Tocumwal at home, Deniliquin host Cobram, Nathalia host Finley and Katunga travel to Berrigan.
