Nagambie Cricket Club will host its annual Pink Stumps Day this Saturday when it takes on Central Park-St Brendan’s at Nagambie Recreation Reserve.
It is the second year that Nagambie will raise funds for breast cancer carers after it raised an incredible $10,809 last year.
The event will start at 1pm during the Cricket Shepparton B-grade game, with Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland opening the day before Hawthorn AFLW player (and local) Sophie Locke and breast cancer survivor Fiona Dowling act as guest speakers.
Club treasurer and event organiser Sharay Slivarich said after the success of last year’s Pink Stumps Day there was no way she could get away with not running the event in 2024.
“It was huge. I sort of just had an idea last year. We didn’t know how it was going to work out and it was just so successful,” Slivarich said.
“Our main entertainment is a drag queen and we have the same one back from last year. She sets the tone as soon as she gets there.
“It starts at one o’clock and, to be honest, I think we got kicked out at 10 o’clock last year ... even though the event does finish at 4.30pm.”
Despite Nagambie being a smaller, rural community, Slivarich believes that a lot of the women in the area have been affected one way or another by breast cancer.
And while there are facilities and breast care nurses in the Greater Shepparton area, Slivarich believes that many women still have to go to Melbourne, away from their families, to get the support they need.
“I think being a rural community, there’s not a lot of breast care. I mean, there are breast care nurses up here, but obviously we want to raise more money to get more help up here,” she said.
“If we can raise more money to get more breast care nurses out in Shepparton, it would prevent us from having to go to Melbourne.“
