In a back and forth opening contest in the Goulburn Valley League, Echuca’s A-grade netballers walked away with a win against Shepparton United by the skin of their teeth.
Echuca managed to stave off a hungry Demons side in the first quarter, battling up and down the court to lead the first period by a pair of goals.
The visiting Shepparton United players were not just going to roll over in the second quarter, fighting back with a flurry of goals.
The girls in green had a solid quarter but were overtaken by the Demons in a close contest, entering half-time trailing by a single goal.
Entering the third term, the Murray Bombers had a point to prove — that they are willing and capable to again climb to the top of the premiership mountain.
Echuca came out all guns blazing, getting over the top of United to snatch the lead back with a quarter to go, this time by four.
While it was the Murray Bombers’ lowest scoring period for the contest, scoring nine, they still managed to keep the Demons at bay, thanks to a strong all-round effort.
A-grade coach and goal attack Belinda Lees celebrated 100 games in the green and white, and what a way to bring it up, claiming victory by three goals.
The final score was Echuca 44 to Shepparton United 41.
The victory served as a good test for the side, as the side will face defending A-grade premier Euroa at home in round two.
