The 2022 community football season finished last week, or did it?
Two new initiatives from AFL Victoria are set to keep the game ticking over as the weather gets warmer with AFL X and AFL 9s set to hit Shepparton and Echuca.
While many people’s mind may jump to a time when Jack Riewoldt’s Team Rampage lifted the AFL X crown, the variation on Australian rules has now transformed into a game to encourage participation in 8-14-year-olds.
Set to be held at Shepparton Sport City and Echuca’s Victoria Park, the newly-named Junior X competition will be for kids, while adults will have the option of playing AFL 9s.
With both having modified rules to make the game more enjoyable for all involved, AFL Goulburn Murray participation co-ordinator Bailey Bell said the different laws were to make the junior game flow quicker.
“It (Junior X) is a different approach to footy, but it’s more social and more fun compared to the community footy which tends to be more serious,” Bell said.
“We want to try and have a level playing field out there with the modified rules.
“They (the kids) can actually pick who they want to play with, whether that’s through their footy club or whether their friends get together in a group, it’s a totally different approach to the community side of things.”
For those older football fans looking to keep the legs ticking over, AFL 9s provides a great arena to enjoy a kick with friends or colleagues for those older than 15.
“It’s not going to be taken too seriously, it’s more of a hit and giggle type set-up,” Bell said.
“It’s more that social aspect, mixing with different people, meeting new people and enjoying it.”
Those keen to get involved are encouraged to register as soon as possible, with the seasons set to start shortly.
For those interested in joining the Junior X competition, the first session will be held on Tuesday, October 4 at Shepparton Sports City from 5.45pm to 7pm.
Meanwhile adults or young people interested in playing AFL 9s can head to the participate tab on AFL Victoria’s website.
