The grass courts at Numurkah Lawn Tennis Club are being carefully manicured for this weekend’s annual Australia Day tournament.

After the success of last year’s tournament, which had many getting out to have a hit post-lockdown, organisers are hoping for a similar turnout.

President Nick Ludington said current circumstances had presented a new challenge for the club to consider carefully.

“Obviously with COVID around the area, we’re a little bit concerned with entries and it’s a little bit touch-and-go — but we’re ploughing ahead,” Ludington said.

“Our committee has gone with the thought of, get events in, whoever turns up we’ll absolutely make the most of it.”

Ludington says the courts are primed and ready, with players to be treated to fine grass courts which will offer perfect playing conditions.

“Courts are in probably the best condition they’ve ever been, we’ve got players coming from all around the GV and a few coming from Melbourne which is good,” he said.

“We’ve got men’s singles A and B-grade, women’s singles A and B-grade, we’ve actually had to cancel our mixed event, which was on Saturday evening, just don’t have enough entries for that.

“That’s generally more of a social event, so we thought we’d probably just keep it to the tennis given the current environment.”

The tournament will offer four singles events across Saturday, with six doubles events to take place the following day.

The event will get under way this Saturday, January 22 with matches starting at 9am. If you’d like to take part in the tournament, phone Nick Ludington on 0488 401 495.
