Passion and dedication equals gold

Connor Wilson wins gold.

It is more gold for Deniliquin High School student Connor Wilson in his beloved shot put event at the State Athletics Championships.

CJ and his family left on Tuesday for the NSW Combined High Schools State Athletic Championships.

They were held at Olympic Park in Homebush, Sydney.

Connor had his first two events, discus and javelin on Wednesday, and was lucky enough to get two top eight finishes.

It was a rest day on Thursday which allowed him to have a light throwing session in the morning.

On Friday morning he had to be at the call tent at 7.50am for an 8.30am start for shot put.

Despite the constant rain, CJ threw a new personal best which secured him first place and the gold medal in the 14 years shot put.

“Just making top eight for all my events is a really good result,” Connor said.

“I was lucky enough to get a few extra sessions with my coach Emma Burge before we left.

“Emma wasn’t able to come to Sydney so my mum played coach from the coaching box all week.

“I was pretty excited with getting a new PB, especially in the rain. I’ve competed in Sydney a few times and have learnt that you can have four seasons in one day.”

CJ’s parents said they are “very proud of him”.

“His passion and dedication are a credit to him.

“He has already marked out some extra training sessions on the calendar over the next four weeks.”

CJ’s coach Emma Burge couldn’t attend the Sydney event but was keenly following his progress.

“CJ has just been climbing this year with PB after PB and to top it off with a first place at state, as a coach I could not ask for more,” she said.

“With more to work on and training in the next couple of weeks he will be preparing for the NSW All school Championships again held in Sydney, in October.”

Jake Harvey and Remi Baulch also competed at the championships and proudly represented Deniliquin High School in their events.
