Strathmerton’s A-grade netball outfit suffered a heartbreaking Picola District League grand final defeat to Tungamah on Saturday.
The 34-32 result at the Katunga Recreation Reserve saw the Bears get over the line, with the side simply the better team on the day.
The two Picola District League powerhouses were almost destined to lock horns in the big dance after both sides enjoyed near-perfect campaigns.
Strathmerton, unbeaten since round one, secured the minor premiership and cruised all the way to the decider on the back of some superb performances from its experienced core.
Tungamah blitzed its first full season returning to the league, chalking up 13 wins and just three defeats throughout the year.
For Strathmerton coach Olivia Osborne, the grand final loss was disappointing.
But a hugely impressive first year in the coaching role has given the Bulldogs mentor plenty to look forward to next year.
“Tungamah just played really, really well. We had our opportunities but just couldn’t get the job done today,” Osborne said.
“There’s a lot to learn and a lot to take away — it’s my first year coaching, so to make a granny is great. That’s credit to my team, they’re a really great bunch of girls.
“It’s going to hurt a little bit for a few days, but take no credit away from Tungamah, they deserved the win today.”
Osborne said a number of players performed well for Bulldogs on the day, with the side set to come back hungrier next season.
“Grace Thomson had another good game and Caitlyn Price in goal keeper,” she said.
“I don’t think the goal keeper gets rewarded enough I feel like she did a lot, Kate Betson also had another strong game in centre and wing defence.
“I think it’s a good team effort to get to the grand final, hopefully we can stick around next year and go one better.”
