Roos’ six wicket loss to Lavington

Corowa’s Jarred Lane toughed it out against Lavington, top scoring with 52.

After three straight wins, Corowa went down by six wickets to Lavington at Ball Park last Saturday.

in a challenging encounter, Corowa posted a total of 149 for 9 from their 50 overs which included a determined 52 from Jarred Lane.

Corowa’s opening batsmen Patrick Lavis and Shaun Smith faced early pressure from Lavington’s disciplined bowling attack.

Lavis was the first to fall LBW to Ryan Brown for 6, leaving Corowa at 1-10. Smith added a quick 12 off 23 balls, including two boundaries, before being caught by Oscar Lyons off Brown’s bowling, and Corowa soon found themselves at 2-19.

Matthew Wilson, unfortunately, departed for a duck, trapped LBW by Dave Tassell, which left Corowa struggling at 3-22. Matthew Grantham attempted to stabilize the innings with a composed 21 off 40 balls, but his stumping by Tyler Roberson off Hunter Hall’s bowling left Corowa at 4-45. Kade Wilson managed to add just 3 before he was dismissed by Hall, and Ben Mitchell contributed a brisk 12 with two sixes before being caught by Sam O’Connor off Brown, leaving Corowa at 6-97.

At this point, Jarred Lane took charge, playing a patient innings to anchor the side. He compiled a determined 52 off 114 deliveries, striking five boundaries and holding the innings together through key partnerships with the lower order. Lane’s resilience pushed Corowa closer to a competitive total before he was caught by Sam O’Connor off Charlie Hawken at 7-109.

Jay Lavis and Ethan Lane added small but valuable contributions, with Lavis departing for 2 at 8-115. Daniel Athanitis then provided some late-order fireworks, scoring 24 off just 19 balls, including three boundaries and a six, giving Corowa’s total a final boost. Athanitis’s aggressive knock ended at 9-142, and Mark Athanitis remained not out on 4, bringing Corowa’s innings to a close at 149 runs.

Corowa’s innings in the field began with promise as Ethan Lane provided an early breakthrough, trapping opener Oscar Lyons LBW for 14, leaving Lavington at 1-23.

Coach Ben Mitchell bowled with superb accuracy, delivering a tight 10-over spell that included three maidens and claimed a wicket for just 17 runs at an economy of 1.70. Mitchell’s disciplined bowling applied pressure, supported by Patrick Lavis, who contributed with an economical 3-over spell, taking 1-8 and dismissing Darcy Smith (24), leaving Lavington at 4-137.

Despite these efforts, Hall found support in his captain Chris Galvin, who scored 23 before a sharp run-out from Matthew Grantham, with Shaun Smith’s assist, at 2-70. Samuel Harris added 11 before being bowled by Mitchell at 3-95, but Lavington’s lower order held steady as they inched closer to the target. Corowa’s remaining bowlers found it challenging to break through Hall’s defence. Jay Lavis, Mark Athanitis, and Daniel Athanitis each delivered spells that, despite containing runs at times, couldn’t prevent Lavington’s steady accumulation. With Hall and Nathan Brown (4*) seeing Lavington to 153 for 4, Corowa’s target proved slightly below par.

The boys will look forward to a bye this weekend and will bounce back stronger for North Albury the following round.

On Saturday the C2 boys travelled up to Xavier to take on last year’s premiers in St Pats which would be the first real test for the season.

Winning the toss Corowa decided to bat first and was met with a strong St Pats bowling line up with a good mixture of some upcoming juniors and some seasoned veterans who bowled well throughout the innings. Mick Drew with his first bat for the club showed great poise and patience in his innings of 65 batting at number 3 which was highlighted with one of the best flicks for 6 off the legs you’ll see in district cricket.

Pat Mitchell, in his first hit in three seasons, also batted well with 41 in a promising sign for the upcoming season and along with Billy Raggett making 34 opening the batting were the main contributors with the bat which seen Corowa finish their innings on 9/178.

With St Pats chasing 179 Jack Williamson and Marc Playford opened the bowling with Playford striking first being successful with one of the 15 plus LBW appeals which Corowa had in the first 10 overs. At the drinks break after 21 overs Corowa seemed to be on top having St Pats 4/51 with Brockwell and Lethbridge at the crease. The 5th wicket partnership of 133 between the 2 batmen would end up seeing St Pats chase down the target with six balls tospare. Playford was the pick of the bowlers with 3/18 off his 8 overs and was well supported by Blayre Smith and Levi Phibbs with figures of 1/27 and 1/29 respectively.

Overall it was a high standard game of cricket for C2 level and with the goals achieved from the Corowa side to bat out our 40 overs and get a good challenging game of cricket under our belts we move onto this weeks game against North Albury with the confidence high.

Under 14s Div 1

This week saw us take on North Albury who are third on the ladder. Losing the toss we were sent into bat.

Harry and Dougy got us off to a measured start before Dougy got a good ball from their left armer that removed his leg stump having us 1/6 and bringing Charlie to the crease. Harry was busy teaching the ball a cricket lesson whilst Charlie was getting himself going at the other end. Their partnership was on 36 before Charlie’s off stump was knocked over with him on 12.

Archie joined Harry at the crease as Harry continued on his way towards 50 and Archie uncharacteristically was hitting a lot of singles before cracking his first boundary well into his innings. Harry fell on 46 with a skied ball with the team 3/78 after 18 overs and on their way to posting a decent total.

Archie was joined by Finley Douglas who was having his first real bat of the season and looked solid early playing a supporting role to Archie’s blistering bat. Fin scored 7 runs before he had one of his pegs removed. It was a solid innings for his first hit of the season.

This brought Cal Corcoran to the crease and he set about scoring, cracking a great boundary early on to get off the mark. Archie and Cal combined well with Archie hitting a quickfire 50 before retiring which brought Jake Rhodes to the crease for the first time this season.

Jake was looking really solid and scoring some important singles with Cal ticking the runs over at the other end. Jake was retired late in the innings to give some of the other boys a bat as well however for a kid that was nervous about batting at the 14s level he looked really solid and hopefully now knows he can add to the team with his batting at this level.

Abe came in with about four overs remaining and started really well before a good ball claimed his middle stump to remove him on 3 and have the team 5/158. Enter Jagger Doody who quickly got off the mark. Jagger got a few runs on the board as his batting partners fell in the last over with the first one being Cal and then Archie when he came back in.

Jagger was bowled on the last ball of the innings for 3 with the team making 164. Next week we will see if this is enough to claim the points.

Corowa Div 2 Under 14 boys showcased their talent and teamwork in a two-day match against North Albury. Batting first in excellent conditions, Corowa set the tone early, and their impressive performance laid the foundation for a commanding total of 285 runs declared.

Openers Jackson Barber and Oli Matthews took to the crease with confidence. Both players made their mark on the game, each scoring 50 runs and retiring, providing a solid start for their team. Matthews was particularly explosive, reaching 52 off just 28 balls, combining aggression with precision.

Following their outstanding opening partnership, Will Tourney stepped up to maintain the momentum, also making a significant contribution with 50 runs. The batting continued to shine with George Smith’s excellent performance, as he brought his own half-century to the table. Smith, known for his strategic farming of the strike, scored 50 runs off another quick 28 balls, demonstrating an impressive ability to rotate the strike effectively, especially with his partner, Nathias Price, who contributed a steady 16 runs not out.

With a final total of 5 for 285 declared, coach and players alike are enthusiastic about their prospects heading into the next week’s bowling innings.

As Corowa prepares for the bowling challenge ahead, all eyes will be on the young bowlers to see if they can match the exceptional standard set by their batting counterparts.

The boys put in a really good performance against a quality Barunduda team at the high school Friday night. Sent into bat we started strongly with our opening pair both retiring, George Smith 18 and Jack Timms 12. The Rangers’ bowling was as good as you see which made scoring difficult for the rest of the team but the boys refused to give their wicket away only losing 3 wickets for the innings. Jake Rhodes was the best of the remaining batsmen scoring 14 not out finishing our innings at 3/61.

Into field and the opposition batsmen looked dangerous with some hard hitting before Jake was able to get a wicket in the second over. The batsmen got on top over the next part of the innings and come into the halfway drinks break at 1/39. The belief was still there with our fielding and enthusiasm up and about but unfortunately the runs got reeled in with a few overs to spare.

Jake Rhodes finished off well picking up two more wickets in consecutive balls in his second over in a great bowling performance. Jack Timms bowled nice and tight with 0/2, Austin Loughman in his first game for the club got 0/4 with some quality leg spin and Ollie Bedford kept them honest with 0/5 off his 2 overs. Overall a really good effort.

This week the boys were away to Wodonga Raiders. Sent in to bat the boys put on an absolute show. Six batsmen finished with double figures. Kobe Raggett 23* Jobe Ollington 20* Oscar Amor 18* and debutant Billy Hunter in his first game of cricket finished with 17* setting a massive total of 1/145 off the 20 overs.

With the ball the boys were just as good putting pressure on in the field and everyone bowling minimal extras. The Raiders finished up with a score of 51, Hugh Hicks finishing with figures of 3/8 and Jack Nixon 2/5. Outstanding performance by all of the boys. Thanks to Carrie Playford for scoring and all the parents who help out every week.
